🐝 PROGRAM OVERVIEW

A New Orleans Beehive Expansion Project

The What It Bees Like Host-A-Hive Program allows individuals, businesses, and community spaces in the Greater New Orleans area to host managed honey bee hives on their property. By hosting a hive, you support local pollination, contribute to a healthier ecosystem, and participate in the production of raw, local honey—without needing to manage the bees yourself. You’re welcome to participate in hive activities such as installations, inspections, and honey harvesting, but it is not required.

WHY HOST A HIVE?

Honeybees play a critical role in pollinating trees, fruits, vegetables, and native plants across our region. Hosting a hive can:

• Increase pollination in your surrounding area

• Provide access to raw, local honey

• Support environmental sustainability efforts

• Create a unique and educational experience

When surplus honey is available, it will be harvested and shared with you. Honey production varies by season and is not guaranteed. If needed, honey shares may be supplemented from nearby hives.

HOSTING GUIDELINES

Hive placement follows general Louisiana guidelines:

• Up to 2 hives per ¼ acre

• Up to 4 hives per ½ acre

• Up to 6 hives per acre

• Up to 8 hives per acre

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES

• Most hives do not produce surplus honey in their first year

• Honey production varies seasonally and is not guaranteed

• All plans operate on a 12-month cycle per hive

• Plan details may change at renewal

   We assess your property to ensure it meets placement and safety requirements

   Bees and equipment are sourced based on seasonal availability

4. Installation
   Your hive is installed and ready to go

5. Ongoing Care
   We maintain the hive—you enjoy the experience
